Alert or outbreak: No more 'watch' status for Alberta schools

The province has simplified the way it is describing COVID-19 levels in schools.

Alberta is simplifying the language it uses to describe COVID-19 levels in schools, based on feedback from the public.

On Thursday the province announced the three categories it has been using to describe COVID-19 levels in schools – alert, outbreak or watch – will be simplified down into two categories.

If a school has one to four cases, they will be categorized as an alert. If a school has five or more cases, they will be categorized as an outbreak.

The term “watch" was confusing to many Albertans and the province said they will no longer use it.

“Since the start of the pandemic, we have worked closely with the education system and have listened to their feedback. We are making this terminology change based on their request. Clear and simple language will help all of us work together with families, Alberta Health Services and our school communities to keep students and staff safe," Adriana LaGrange, Minister of Education, said in a media release.

Schools with two or more cases will continue to be reported and reflected on the COVID-19 school map. Additional guidance materials for learning during COVID-19 can be found at alberta.ca/returntoschool.

Public health support provided to students, staff and families remains unchanged, the province said. Parents will continue to be notified when there is a single case in their child’s school and further supports will be initiated when there are two or more cases in a school.
