Business Beat: New music store; NABI program

Made of music

A new music store has opened in downtown St. Albert.

Hunters Music offers consignment guitars, music lessons and instrument repairs.

It also has custom made guitars for sale, built by Edmonton-based luthier David Schaefer. The venue is also currently putting the finishing touches on its own recording studio and stage. Once completed, musicians will have the opportunity to perform in the store, as well as record their own songs.

Schaefer is creating a new guitar brand for store owner Don Hunter, which buyers can customize. Each guitar will be signed by Schaefer on the inside, but will display Hunter on its headstock.

When customers buy a custom guitar through the music store, they’ll get to choose the design and wood used to build it.

“I just wanted to be different. Nobody else is using a luthier (in their store), so I thought it was a great idea,” Hunter said.

When it comes to consignment sales, he will resell instruments on commission that are difficult to sell.

Having worked at a music store for 11 years, Hunter isn’t new to the business. He said he felt it was time to open his own shop offering niche services.

The store’s grand opening will take place sometime in April. Located at 39 St. Thomas Street, Hunters Music is open Tuesday and Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Thursday from noon until 8 p.m., Friday 10 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Sunday is by appointment only.

New program

Northern Alberta Business Incubator has partnered with Campus Innovation Consulting Group (CICG) to offer a new program for businesses wanting to expand.

Businesses will be guided through six modules on building their business and increasing sales.

The modules take place over three Fridays on May 3, 10 and 24.

It costs $2,000 per company, with a two-person max. Since the course meets the standards for the Canada Alberta Job Grant, up to two-thirds of the cost could be covered.

Those who attend will receive a ticket to Inventure$, a business conference taking place in Calgary on June 5-7. Each ticket is worth $749. Attendees also get to take advantage of NABI’s newest program, WayPoint.
