Local land developer Landrex recently became the sponsor to Western Canada’s largest outdoor farmers’ market.

Marketing coordinator Lindsay Mercier said talk of cooperation between Landrex and the St. Albert and District Chamber of Commerce – which organizes the market –started in early February.

Essentially, the sponsorship helps the company grow its bond with St. Albert, and supports the local business community, she said.

“It was just clear that we had to do this and we are just so excited about it,” she said. “We are deeply rooted here and it’s important to us to be a proud supporter of the community.”

People visiting the market will not only notice a change in signs, now reading “St. Albert Farmers’ Market presented by Landrex.” The company is also adding new umbrellas to the food court, and will be giving out 100 insulated shopping bags every week.

Curious minds may also use the opportunity to chat with Landrex employees about developments in Erin Ridge North and other parts of the city, she said.

The St. Albert Farmers’ Market runs every Saturday until October 5 from 10 a.m. until 3 p.m. The market is located on St. Anne and St. Thomas streets in downtown St. Albert.

After eight years in business, The Beer Hunter is opting for a facelift.

Daytime manager Whitney Ruhl said the St. Albert bar wants to keep up with the growing competition in the city, so renovations were in order. The Beer Hunter will close after Sunday, July 28 and reopen on August 16.

“It’s an old building, it’s been the same for a while so we wanted to give it a facelift, a new renovation, a new feel,” she said. “We have new drinks, new food menu items, and the colours of the bar will be the same but feel more fresh.”

The upgraded menu is still a top secret item, she added. But customers can look forward to a bigger bar with added seats, new tables and chairs.

The Beer Hunter is located at 386 St Albert Trail.

Business is going so well for one local store, they are expanding the second year in a row.

Karries Kostumes, located at 2001 Tudor Glen, recently took over another room upstairs from their St. Albert costume store. Whether that clears space or only makes room for more supplies remains to be seen.

“It’s just packed full of stuff. But we did order more, mostly costumes and dance wear,” said store manager Calyn Anderson.

Karries Kostumes opened 31 years ago and Anderson said they rent out at least one costume per day.

The store offers everything from mascot and themed outfits, wigs, masks, makeup, hats and custom sewing.

While Halloween and Christmas are their busiest seasons, they also fill a void in the summer for themed wedding parties and stagettes. In September, they sell most of their dancewear and shoes.

Come August, Anderson said they are also opening an online store through their website www.karrieskostumes.ca.
