Chamber luncheon coming Wednesday

It's one of our favourite luncheons each year, when Santa and his elves (the chamber chair and executive) host the traditional Christmas dinner.

It's one of our favourite luncheons each year, when Santa and his elves (the chamber chair and executive) host the traditional Christmas dinner. It's a wonderful opportunity for business owners to bring their staff and enjoy Christmas carols with the Pickwick Carollers from Visionary College, our M.C. Erwin Lehnert from TD Canada Trust, complimentary wine from the St. Albert Inn poured by chamber directors and a wonderful array of door prizes donated by local chamber members. This luncheon is being held Wednesday, Dec. 9 at the St. Albert Inn, starting at 11:30 a.m. To register please contact Rosa at the chamber office at 780-458-2833 or [email protected].

Women's' speaker series

The 2009/10 Vision of Success speaker series, "Powerful Stories of Women and Business" got off to a great start in November as Elsie Elford, Dean of the MacEwan School of Business, spoke to an appreciative audience about the strengths each person possesses and how to utilize those strengths in building a dynamic team. Our next exceptional speaker will come in February when we welcome Shirley Sander. Shirley's presentation "Against All Odds" will share her incredible personal journey to success in the male-dominated field of land development. To purchase a group ticket for the next three speakers or a single ticket to the next event, please contact the chamber of commerce office at 780-458-2833. Thanks to our November sponsors Concept Jewelry, Gemport, Roche's Fine Things, Pose Hair and the St. Albert Gazette.

First annual Snowflake Festival

Hundreds of St. Albert families flocked to the Downtown Perron district on Thursday evening to see the lighting of the big Christmas tree in front of the community hall and to welcome Santa to the North Pole located inside. With the new snowflake decorations twinkling from the light standards and the Christmas tree proudly showing off its beautiful new custom-made star, it was a night to remember. Mayor Nolan Crouse, MLA Ken Allred, chamber chair Joe Becigneul, and Santa all brought official greetings before the switch was thrown to light the tree. Horse and wagon rides continued throughout the downtown streets, Santa's live reindeer were on display, Christmas singers strolled the streets, Peter and Mary performed in the community hall and the downtown businesses welcomed everyone for a warm and memorable evening. The Snowflake Passport contest continues in participating downtown businesses until Dec. 17 at 4 p.m., so there's still time to get your name in for $650 in gift certificates from downtown Perron district businesses.

Smart growth proposal

The St. Albert Chamber of Commerce is actively involved in advocacy on behalf of its 710-plus members. The government relations committee and board of directors recently met to hear a second presentation on the smart growth planning concept being proposed by the City of St. Albert planning department. This recent presentation was from a planning consultant from Portland, Ore., who has also provided his expert opinions to St. Albert's economic development advisory committee members. With input on this issue from two different perspectives, the committee and board will meet soon for in-depth discussions and a position will be presented to city council on behalf of the chamber of commerce. This is an important issue that will have significant ramifications to the future economic growth of St. Albert. For more information, contact Lynda Moffat at the chamber of commerce, 780-458-2833.
