Learn what to do during a fire – and prevent it from happening in the first place – at the St. Albert Fire Services open house next week.

To kick off Fire Prevention Week, fire services will be holding an information open house on Oct. 5 from 1 to 4 p.m. at Fire Hall No. 3.

This year’s theme is smoke alarms and the importance of testing them monthly.

“A smoke alarm is one of the simplest yet most effective tools for you to have in your home,” says Les David Mroz, fire prevention and safety officer with St. Albert Fire Services.

“In seconds it can warn you and your family about a fire, and give you precious time to get out of the house. Working smoke alarms save people’s lives. Test it monthly and it will be there when you need it most.”

Residents can also learn about fire safety measures that can be done easily in homes, yards or offices. Firefighters will also be on hand to meet community members, show them how different fire apparatuses and equipment works, as well as the inner workings of a fire hall.

“There is usually no shortage of people,” says Mroz.

Fire services will also be participating in the Home Depot Fire Safety Days on Saturday, Oct. 4 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at 750 St. Albert Trail.

Children aged six to 10 can also enter to be Fire Chief for a Day. The winner will meet firefighters, learn about and ride in a fire truck, sit at the Fire Chief’s desk, and even have a meal with the crew. The draw date is Oct. 9.
