Servus Place targets thieves

Staff at Servus Credit Union Place are beefing up security and asking users to secure their valuables after a string of thefts from lockers inside the facility.

New signs are now on display advising customers to secure their valuables, and staff have repositioned several security cameras outside change rooms in an effort to curb thefts. Facility director Diane Enger said staff has been told to be extra vigilant about keeping an eye out for suspicious people.

Enger said staff keeps track of problems at the facility so they can spot possible problems and respond.

She said the new security steps have been taken they appear to be showing some good results.

“Over the last few weeks we have seen a real decrease,” she said.

Enger said any large public facility is going to struggle with these kinds of issues and they have been actively alerting members about the problem.

She said locks have been cut from several lockers, but in many cases the thieves have simply taken property that wasn’t locked up.

Const. Janice Schoepp with the St. Albert RCMP said police were made aware of the problem and worked with facility staff about what steps should be taken.

Scheopp said locking up your valuables is generally a good idea, but also urged people to think about what they really need to bring into a locker room.

“We would encourage people wherever possible to leave valuables at home.”

Enger echoed those sentiments and said staff members are continuing to keep a lookout as well.

“Our staff always keeps an eye out for any suspicious characters.”

Enger said the facility has full-sized lockers and smaller wallet-sized lockers for guests to use.
