Trail construction to wrap up mid-month

Commuters on St. Albert Trail can expect a few more weeks of delays, but the end to the major construction project is in sight.

Work on the trail in Edmonton has been ongoing since 2010, with major construction taking place all last summer. This week barricades went back up, blocking one lane between 136 Avenue and 128 Avenue, as well as between the Yellowhead and 118 Avenue.

The work is putting in pads along the street at bus stops and is expected to last only a few more weeks.

“Without those bus pads, because of the stopping and starting of the buses it tends to rut out the asphalt,” said Kelly Calvez, project co-ordinator with the City of Edmonton.

He said the work the city is doing will prolong the overall life of the road.

“Concrete holds up much better to the stopping and starting pressures of the buses.”

The weather has co-operated with crews thus far and Calvez said they are optimistic the work could be completed soon.

“If the weather is good, hopefully it will be two more weeks.”
