Last Friday night, my wife and I attended the Starfest event at the Arden Theatre and thoroughly enjoyed the talk by Linden MacIntyre; so much so that we decided to buy a copy of his latest book. We lined up at the book sales desk, intending to use our credit card, but there was some trouble with the machine. As is said, cash is king – but when we pooled the contents of our wallets, we were short.

Unbeknownst to us, a gentleman in front of us had just finished his cash transaction and I heard him say, “How much are you short?” “Three bucks,” I replied, and suddenly a loonie and a toonie were in my hand. I looked up, made brief eye contact, I think I muttered a thanks and he was gone. I don’t know who he was and I’m not sure I would recognize him if I encounter him again.

My purpose in writing this letter is to let our community know that there are shining examples of kindness and generosity in our midst, to say thanks publicly and to assure him that I will take his example and pay it forward many times over.

With humble acknowledgement,

John Ball, St. Albert
