Can't afford sculptures, but council will buy them

Yes, in the best of all possible worlds we would all love to be surrounded by beautiful things. The sculptures, for example as lauded by Andy Michaelson, Diane Poole and her grandson.

As the seed was sown to purchase the sculptures by a member of council even though they are not budgeted for, I have no doubt council, guided by administration, will find a way. I read for instance that there is a recently developed fund for the upkeep and the purchase of art. Perhaps there is some creative way that council can reinterpret another funding source so that the cost of this art will be added to the levy we pay for Servus Credit Union Place.

After all what is another quarter of a million? Or perhaps it will become part of the downtown area redevelopment plan (DARP). There are endless possibilities for a council that can re-designate land use and bylaws and create amazing cost overruns. Changing the rules to make this the most beautiful city in Alberta — Canada even — could not be difficult. No doubt before this term is over, we will own the sculptures.

For those of us who live in the real world and end up footing the bill, please remember if you would like a little money left in your bank account so that you can enjoy what pleases you, vote for those who have realistic ideas and do not manipulate the rules when it suits them. Only problem is I know I will not be able to find seven worthy candidates. I hope that this time at least one of the people I vote for is on council. As I learned from a blog I read recently, the only people who matter in this city are the members of council. How true when they can interpret council bylaws in such a creative manner.
