Election signs should be prohibited

It is time that St. Albert city council enacted a bylaw prohibiting those awful election signs. Their origin is obscure but there are many reasons to ban them. The premise is that name exposure translates into votes.

It is time that St. Albert city council enacted a bylaw prohibiting those awful election signs.

Their origin is obscure but there are many reasons to ban them. The premise is that name exposure translates into votes. That implies that the platforms of candidates are irrelevant to the voting process.

The negative aspects of signs are obvious; democracy is not served because a wealthy candidate may get a seat based on a prodigious number of signs. That successful candidate could be the worst one of the bunch and do a terrible job.

Secondly, they cost the candidates a lot of money that could be better spent getting their platforms to the potential voter. Finally, they are a blight on the landscape and distract drivers who may be speeding, texting and chewing gum at the same time.

Successful candidates to council, please rectify this pitiful situation.
