We are excited about the proposed development of the Protestant school district site in Akinsdale. We believe this is an innovative approach to make affordable housing available to the citizens of St. Albert.
The Outreach Committee of St. Albert United Church has advocated for affordable housing for many years. Our members have pounded nails, prepared and served meals and raised funds for Habitat projects in St. Albert and Edmonton. Habitat for Humanity and Apollo Development are to be commended for joining together and beginning to address the need for affordable housing in our community.
We especially like: the balance of Habitat homes and open market affordable homes; the sale of open market homes at 80 per cent of market value; the 20 per cent of resale that would be redirected to Habitat for Humanity in second mortgages; and the willingness of all parties to meet with the stakeholders and discuss issues and concerns.
We would like to commend council for supporting and facilitating the previous Habitat builds and urge the members of council to continue their visionary outlook by supporting this Akinsdale project.
