Ingenuity can make city bicycle friendly

I read with interest the story on cycling in St. Albert published on Aug. 7. I agree with Nolan Crouse on the part about how the arterials are not designed for cyclists. One has to remember, that these routes were not designed with cyclists in mind.

I agree with Nolan Crouse on the part about how the arterials are not designed for cyclists. One has to remember, that these routes were not designed with cyclists in mind. These routes were planned at a time when cycling wasn't even considered a form of transportation.

The good news is that arterials such as Giroux, Boudreau and Sir Winston Churchill can all be adapted to accommodate cyclists without impacting motorists. I can understand why people cycle on the sidewalks, despite the fact that this is against the law under the Alberta Motor Vehicle Act.

The city needs to look to the Netherlands to see how they have spent the time and effort to make their country bike friendly. St. Albert can pull this off with careful planning and ingenuity.
