Let's encourage bicycle use

I am a 15-year-old boy and I cannot drive. My mom worked most of the summer from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. so being the teenager I am, I woke up around 11 each morning and didn't know what to do with the afternoon considering I didn't have a ride anywhere.

My mom worked most of the summer from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. so being the teenager I am, I woke up around 11 each morning and didn't know what to do with the afternoon considering I didn't have a ride anywhere. I was getting tired of bumming around the house all afternoon, so I relied on some good old manpower and hopped on my bicycle.

I discovered this was a really enjoyable way of getting around. I did in fact also discover some very annoying but very fixable problems about this fun eco-friendly way of getting around. From the virtually non-existent shoulder to the busy sidewalks. I did find the path along the Sturgeon River a very efficient way of getting places but if your destination isn’t along the river, this path isn’t very useful.

After a recent trip to downtown Vancouver and seeing how they have instituted a bicycle lane, I have since then thought that a bicycle lane or something along the lines of a small two-meter wide lane dedicated to cyclists would encourage people to use bicycles as a mode of transportation in a such a small city such as St. Albert.

Not only would it burn a few calories but it would help the environment and get you out of the house.
