Pedestrians, cyclists need to follow the rules too

Re: "Motorists too cavalier about pedestrians," St. Albert Gazette, Aug. 28, 2010. It seems that everyone could do with a refresher on the rules of the road, whether they be a pedestrian or someone on wheels.

Too many times I see pedestrians not bothering to look both ways in marked and unmarked crosswalks, all the while expecting motorists to stop on a dime. Pedestrians, please remember that steel beats skin every time.

Then, there are those cyclists who complain that motorists won't give them a break, when they themselves do not follow the rules of the road. How many times do you see adults riding their bikes through marked and unmarked crosswalks? Worse yet, how many adults do you see teaching their children to ride their bikes through crosswalks and not bothering to teach them hand signals? Either you are a pedestrian or a driver — pick one.

No matter where you go, there will always be idiots who drive too fast, pedestrians who believe that they can stop a semi and cyclists who cannot decide what they want to be when they grow up. For each and every one of these poor lost souls, there are family members who thank the lord every day that they make it home safely.
