Plebiscite needed on nuclear power

To nuke or not to nuke — that is the question. I am disappointed with the decision by the provincial government to lift the moratorium on nuclear power plants in Alberta.

To nuke or not to nuke — that is the question.

I am disappointed with the decision by the provincial government to lift the moratorium on nuclear power plants in Alberta. The $250,000 for the government-commissioned report on nuclear power was not money well spent. Albertans were not given enough opportunity to voice their opinion on this very serious intrusion into their health and financial welfare. Not enough debate has transpired on why Albertans would want to bring nuclear fission within their midst. Many questions remain to be properly answered.

Is nuclear power clean? Sustainable? Greenhouse gas emissions free? Reliable? Cost-effective? Safe?

From the research I have done, I have concluded that the answer to all these questions is no. We need a rigorous debate about the pros and cons of bringing nuclear fission to Alberta so that Albertans can come to their own well-informed decisions. Towards this end, I request that the government put the question to the people in a plebiscite: “Should we allow nuclear power plants to be built in Alberta?”

Then let all Albertans have their say!
