Basketball Hoops: St. Albert high school basketball updates

Division two men

It’s a big game Monday between two St. Albert rivals in metro Edmonton division two men’s basketball.

The showdown between the Bellerose Bulldogs and Paul Kane Blues starts at 5:30 p.m. at Bellerose.

Previous clashes have been chippy marathon affairs as Paul Kane won 80-60 last year and Bellerose was victorious 85-76 in 2018, 76-61 in 2017 and the 83-77 division one result in 2016 and all the games were staged at Bellerose.

Paul Kane (4-2), last year’s division two finalist with 13 wins in 14 games, is winless in its last two league matches and 10-9 overall while Bellerose (1-4) is fighting for a playoff spot.

This weekend Bellerose is competing at the Archbishop MacDonald tournament and Friday’s score against the Grande Prairie Composite Warriors in the round of eight was unavailable at press time.

The next game for Bellerose goes today against the Edmonton Christian Lions or E.P. Scarlett Lancers of Calgary at 9:45 a.m. in the consolation bracket or 1:15 p.m. in the semifinal.

The consolation final is 4:45 p.m. and the championship game is 8:15 p.m.

Meanwhile, the division two St. Albert Skyhawks (3-2) host the J. Percy Page Panthers (4-2) Monday at 5:30 p.m.

The Skyhawks' last league game was 77-62 over Bellerose on Jan. 8.

The Skyhawks and Paul Kane hook up Feb. 10 at 5:30 p.m. at the SkyDome.

Upcoming for the Skyhawks is the Father Troy tournament hosted by the St. Joseph Saints next weekend.

Basketball at PK

The first of nine division one games in February for the Paul Kane Blues in the metro Edmonton women’s league is Monday against the Strathcona Lords.

Tipoff is 5:30 p.m. at Paul Kane.

In league play, Paul Kane is 3-2 and Strathcona is 4-2.

The 4A provincial rankings list Paul Kane ninth and Strathcona is an honourable mention.

Paul Kane was 10-4 overall entering the St. Mary’s Saints Senior Classic this weekend in Calgary.

Paul Kane was slotted on the same side of the eight-team draw as the Cardston Cougars, William Aberhart Orange of Calgary and the host St. Mary’s Saints.

In three previous tournaments, Paul Kane was the runner-up at the Mike Dea Classic and Totem Hoop Classic before winning its home tourney and the score in the Jan. 11 final was 67-50 against St. Mary’s, ranked 10th in 4A.

Bellerose hoops

The Bellerose Bulldogs roar into action this weekend at the Archbishop MacDonald tournament with a winning record in high school women’s basketball.

Bellerose was 11-2 overall before playing the Charles Spencer Mavericks of Grande Prairie in the round of eight and Friday’s score was unavailable at press time.

Last month at the Leduc tournament, Bellerose whipped the Mavericks 65-19 en route to finishing fourth at 2-2.

Friday’s result will determine if Bellerose plays the E.P. Scarlett Lancers of Calgary or the Edmonton Christian Lions today at 8 a.m. in the consolation bracket or the 11:30 a.m. semifinal.

The consolation final is 3 p.m. and the championship game is 6:30 p.m.

Bellerose kicks off the second half of its metro Edmonton division two schedule Wednesday against the Strathcona Christian Academy Eagles (5-1), ranked sixth provincially in 3A. Tipoff is 6:30 p.m. at Sherwood Park.

Bellerose, last year’s division three champion, and Archbishop MacDonald are tied for top spot in division two at 6-0.
