Miners streaking

The senior B St. Albert Miners continue their six-game homestand Saturday in the Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League.

Ball drop is 9 p.m. against the Rockyview Knights of Airdrie at Go Auto Arena.

The first-place Miners (5-1, 66 GF/41 GA) are winners of five in a row and the Knights (4-2, 44 GF/39 GA) are ranked second in the six-team standings.

Last weekend, the Miners posted victories of 11-6 against the Calgary Mountaineers (3-3) and 16-8 against the Calgary Raiders (1-4).

Darren Kinnear was the top scorer against the Mountaineers with five goals and two assists, while Matt Kristiansen and Richard Lachlan chipped in with three goals and two assists apiece.

The Miners trailed 6-5 after 40 minutes before pulling away with six even-strength goals in the third period.

Lachlan’s five goals against the Raiders included one on the power play and another shorthanded.

Lachlan leads all RMLL scorers with 20 goals and 35 points after racking a league-high 51 goals (19 on the power play) and 103 points in 16 games last year.

Kinnear’s two goals and five assists, Kristiansen’s three goals and three assists, plus a pair each by Jason Riley and Derek Burak and singles from Tristen Friestad and Dawson Reykdal also propelled the team to victory.

The three-time defending President's Cup national champions are now 92-5-2 overall after losing the 2015 RMLL provincial final.

Junior A results

The junior A St. Albert Miners left their mark in Calgary last weekend with two wins against two perennial Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League champions.

Scores were 13-8 against the Calgary Raiders (1-2) and 9-8 against the Calgary Mountaineers (1-3).

The Raiders and Mountaineers have gone head-to-head in the RMLL provincial final for seven consecutive years with the Raiders winning four times, including the last two finals.

Evan Forgrave’s three goals and five assists did the most damage against the Raiders.

Maurice Kelly, Matt DeGirolamo and Marcus Needham with a pair apiece and singles by Braedan Duckworth, Jacob Power, Jacob Bowen and Jaydan Green contributed to the win.

Eight goals in the middle frame made it 10-5.

The Mountaineers scored three unanswered goals in the third period as the Miners hung on for the win after posting period leads of 5-3 and 9-5.

A hat-trick by Power and two-goal efforts by DeGirolamo and Wildeboer paced the attack.

Liam McCann and Forgrave also scored and Braedan Duckworth and Needham added three assists apiece.

On tap next for the Miners (3-1) are three games against the Saskatchewan SWAT (2-2) this weekend in Saskatoon.

Crude on fire

The next home game for the junior B Tier I St. Albert Crude is Saturday in the Rocky Mountain Lacrosse League.

Start time is 5:30 p.m. against the Saskatchewan SWAT at Akinsdale Arena.

The Crude and Fort Saskatchewan Rebels share first place in the north division at 6-3 and the SWAT (7-2) leads the east division.

The fourth win in five games for the Crude was 13-7 against the host Olds Mavericks (5-2-1) Sunday.

An eight-point performance by Mathieu Gautier included five goals against the top team in the central division.

Adam Hawrelak also sniped three goals and Brock McIntyre had four helpers.

The Crude’s home record is 1-2 after Friday’s 13-11 decision against the Edmonton Warriors (2-7).

Jorden McCuaig and McIntyre generated seven points apiece and McCuaig’s four goals led all scorers against the Crude’s division rival.
