Junior golf results

St. Albert golfers teed it up in select company at the 29th annual Alberta Junior PGA Masters last week at Wolf Creek.

The Brezovski sisters, Brooke and Belle of the Glendale, and Connor Ackroyd of the Windermere qualified for the tournament invites based on their position on the 2018 Golf Canada Junior Order of Merit.

The junior tournament was initiated to provide elite competition to a limited field of Alberta's top junior golfers and Invitations were extended to players in the U18, U16 and U14 age divisions.

The first round was played on the Old Course and the second was staged on the Links Course.

Brooke finished fifth in U16 with scores of 79 and 78 for a two-day total of 157.

Grace Bell of the Glencoe placed first at 148 (71-77) as the overall female champion.

Belle was fourth in U14 at 188 (98-90) and the winner was Brooke Frerichs of the Glencoe at 154 (75-79).

Ackroyd placed 15th out of 20 males in the U18 division at 159 (84-75) and the first-place finisher was Ethan Choi of Pincher Creek at 135 (66-69).

Leading up to the Alberta Junior PGA Masters, Ackroyd, 18, was the runner-up in the collegiate division at the Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour’s Humber College PGM Classic at the Fairmont Banff Springs Golf Club.

Ackroyd (79-72) finished three shots behind the winner, 23-year-old Dakota Smith (74-73) of Edmonton.

Highlighting a strong St. Albert presence at the CJGA Skechers Junior Series event last weekend at Woodside Golf Course in Airdrie was Brooke’s first-place showing at 155 (82-73) in the U19 division.

Brooke’s 73 was not only a personal best but the low round put her into a playoff hole on the final day against Stephanie Chelack (76-79) of Calgary and the Grade 10 St. Albert Skyhawk was able to secure her first career CJGA victory with a par on the first playoff hole.

Belle tied for second in the U15 division at 181 (92-89), but placed third due to the countback. Frerichs led the division at 163 (85-78).

In the U19 male division, Talin Thera tied for seventh at 152 (80-72), Theo Leakos shared ninth place at 157 (75-82) and Kyle Racich was 13th at 161 (77-84).

Nicolas-Guy Landry of Calgary was first out of 19 finishers at 146 (74-72).
