Club champions

Sandra Fisher was crowned the Ladies Club Champion for the 22nd time at Sturgeon Valley Golf & Country Club.

Fisher carded rounds of 81 and 85 for a two-day total of 166 last weekend to finish three strokes ahead of Karen Morris (84-85), the senior low-gross winner.

The first of 21 club triumphs in 26 years for Fisher started in 1991 before teenager Brooke Brezovski won consecutive titles in 2017 and 2018.

Fisher’s championship run included 10 in 11 years from 2001 to 2011 as Morris prevailed in 2005. Morris was also the club champion in 1999 and 2000.

Fisher also swept the ladies’ and senior ladies’ championships four years in a row from 2013 to 2016.

The Super Senior champion was Ellen Hodgins at 177 (93-84) and Linda Mitchell was the overall low-net winner at 144.

In the men’s draw, Mark Rosychuk captured his fourth club championship with a second-day score of 73 to finish at 145.

Rosychuk’s club honours include tournament victories in 2008, 2014 and 2016.

Dean Misner was the runner-up by one shot after consecutive rounds of 73 as the senior men’s champion.

Evan Matty, the junior male champion for the second year in a row, also tied for second at 146 and his score of 71 Sunday was the weekend’s only under-par round.

Lou Legault placed fourth at 151 (73-78), followed by Chad Rechlo at 152 (76-76) and Dean Karbonik at 154 (79-75).

Talin Thera tied for seventh at 155 (75-80) with the second-best junior male score.

Shane O’Neill, last year’s men’s club winner, wound up 20th at 159 (77-82).

The junior female winner was Regan Ackroyd at 192 (98-94).

Junior golf results

The 106th Canadian Women’s Amateur Championship is underway for Brooke Brezovski of St. Albert.

Brezovski, who celebrated her 16th birthday Monday, is among 156 national and international competitors at the Red Deer Golf & Country Club.

The Grade 11 St. Albert Catholic High School student received an invite based on previous performances and National Order of Merit standings with Alberta Golf and Golf Canada.

The Canadian women’s amateur is listed as an A event in the world amateur golf rankings.

The last major tournament for Brezovski and her younger sister, Belle, was the Alberta Ladies Amateur Championship, July 9 to 11 at The Ranch.

Brooke placed 12th in a field of 40 with a three-day total of 233 (77-75-81) and Belle finished 22nd overall at 249 (86-80-83).

Belle also placed first in the third flight category for low gross.

The winner was Becky Martin of Medicine Hat at 214 (73-74-67) and the runner-up was Kylie Barros of the Glendale at 221 (75-73-73).

The Brezovskis and Ethan Wilson of St. Albert, all three are Glendale members, also competed at the Alberta Junior Championships July 2 to 5 at Highwood Golf Club in High River.

In the U18 female division, Brooke finished 10th with a four-day total of 322 (80-78-87-77) as 12 golfers made the cut and Belle was among the nine that fell short of the cutline at 261 (85-90-86).

Annabelle Ackroyd of the Glencoe was the top finisher at 283 (70-68-72-73).

Wilson tied for 48th in the U18 male division at 316 (76-81-77-82) as 61 made the cut.

Carter Graf of Red Deer was the winner at 279 (67-66-75-71) and Ethan de Graaf of the Glendale placed second at 280 (72-70-70-68).

Provincial baseball

Legion Memorial Park is the venue for three upcoming Baseball Alberta championships.

The U11 AA Tier VII tournament goes this weekend and the Tier I 13U AA and 18U AA provincials are Aug. 2 to 4.

The latest Baseball Alberta stats list the St. Albert Cardinals at 5-11-1 in U11 Tier IV AA (4-1 provincial round), 10-7 in 13U AA Tier I (2-3 provincial round) and 13-2-1 in 18U AA Tier I (3-1 provincial round).

The Tier I AA provincial winners advance to westerns, Aug. 16 to 18 in Strathmore.

Last weekend in the A division provincials, the Cardinals were finalists in their respective 11U, 13U and 15U tournaments.
