Midget AA season
St. Albert Source for Sports Crusaders make their season debut tonight against the team they beat for the 2019 Northern Alberta Midget AA Hockey League title.
Puck drop is 8:30 p.m. against the Camrose Vikings at Mark Messier Arena.
The Crusaders swept Camrose in the best-of-five final to finish 40-5-3 in league, provincial and playoff action with one returnee from the 30-15-4 championship team the previous season
The final was also the fifth in six years for the Crusaders, winners of the 2014 playoff crown.
Four players are back from the 2019 championship lineup and the team’s new head coach is Mike Feagan.
Friday the Crusaders are in Leduc to faceoff against the Roughnecks at 8 p.m.
Meanwhile, the St. Albert Steel, formerly the midget AA Blues, 14-14-4 in the 2018/19 regular season, started league play Friday against the visiting PAC Saints and the score was unavailable at press time.
Next Saturday, the Steel plays the SSAC Canadian Brewhouse at 5:15 p.m. at Confederation Arena.
The head coach of the Steel is Paul MacDonald.
The NAMHL consists of 23 teams split into four divisions in the metro and rural conferences, and the Crusaders and Steel are slotted in the same division.
High school golf
Ethan Wilson of the St. Albert Skyhawks finished in a five-way tie for 15th place at the Alberta Schools’ Athletic Association golf championships this week.
Wilson carded rounds of 78 and 82 for a two-day score of 160.
The winner was Hunter Thomson of West Island College of at 144 (71-73) and the runner-up was Cole Bergheim of the Hunting Hills Lightning at 147 (74-73).
The male tournament featured 112 participants.
Provincials were staged at the Alberta Springs Golf Resort in Red Deer and the Innisfail Golf Club.
Wilson qualified for provincials with a score of 75 for a share of third place at the metro Edmonton zones at The Links in Spruce Grove.
Wilson, the Glendale Golf & Country Club’s junior champion, is teeing it up at the Golf Canada Future Links, Driven by Acura Fall Series Championship, and the opening round was Thursday at Crown Isle Golf Resort.
St. Albert's Brooke and Belle Brezovski of the Glendale are also entered in the four-day tournament at Courtenay, B.C.
Brooke had also qualified for provincials with a fifth-place score of 76 at zones at Stony Plain Golf Course, but elected to concentrate on her studies at St. Albert Catholic High School.
Last year, representing the Skyhawks, Brooke placed fourth overall (75-80) out of 69 females at provincials.
Mission ringette
The U14AA St. Albert Mission skated into a new season last weekend at the Cochrane Rusty Ring exhibition tournament.
The Mission finished 2-2 with wins against Spruce Grove and Calgary White, and losses to Calgary Blue and Calgary Red.
The Mission roster consists of seven returning players from the 2019 provincial finalists and fourth-place team at westerns.
The Mission are among nine U14AA teams in Alberta as one of four in the Black Gold League.
The next tournament is the 21st annual Turkey Ring, hosted by the St. Albert Ringette Association Oct. 11 to 14.
The U16AA and U199AA Mission teams will also play their first home games of the season at the Turkey Ring.
This weekend both teams are in Calgary for the Ring It On exhibition tournament.
The U19AA lineup has seven players back while the U16AA team features nine returnees.
Both teams failed to qualify at provincials for the Canadian Ringette Championships last season as six U16AA and four U19AA teams from Alberta advanced to nationals in Charlottetown and Summerside PEI.
Nationals consisted of 19 U16AA and 18 U19 AA teams.
Next year nationals are in Ottawa and the U14AA, U16A, U19A and Open A westerns are hosted by Prince George. B.C.
