Road race Sunday

Registration totals for the St. Albert Road Race on Sunday exceeded the 300 mark.

As of Friday morning, the breakdown of participants were 122 for the 34th annual 10-miler, 55 for the fifth annual 10-kilometre, 81 for the fifth annual five-kilometre and 50 for the third annual one-kilometre fun run for kids.

Organizers for the road race, presented by Active Physio Works, have extended the online registration deadline at www.zone4.ca until Sunday morning.

Entries will also be accepted in person at the St. Albert Curling Club, the race venue next to the start/finish line on Sir Winston Churchill Avenue.

Race times are 9 a.m. for the 10-miler, 9:05 a.m. for the 10-kilometre, 9:10 a.m. for the five-kilometre and 11 a.m. for the one-kilometre.

Among the recent registrants are Kendall Barber, the fastest female in the 10-miler in 2016 at one hour, six minutes and three seconds for 13th overall; Jack Cook, a former male champion of the Canadian Death Race; ultra-marathon champion Ailsa MacDonald; and Luke Hanson, a three-time five-kilometre winner of the road race and competitive triathlete who will be among the 10-mile contenders for the King of the Road crown.

Last year’s 10-miler champion was Matt Hope of Red Deer with 53 minutes and 46 seconds, and the top female for the second time in six years was Alexandra Gordichuk of Edmonton in one hour, three minutes and four seconds for eighth place.

Overall, there were 90 finishers in the 10-miler, 59 in the 10-kilometre, 44 in the five-kilometre and 46 in the one-kilometre in 2018.

Proceeds from Sunday’s event will support the participating elementary, junior high and high schools in the greater Edmonton area.

Alberta Cup

The top 2004-born male hockey players in the province are competing in the Alberta Cup this weekend in Red Deer and among the participants in the six-team tournament are the following St. Albert and area representatives:

Alberta Yellow: defenceman Cale Ashcroft, forwards Kai Billey, Matthew Cesarz, Levi Fesyk, Zakk Makeiff and Matt Savoie of St. Albert and forward Michael Romeo of Sturgeon County.

Alberta Blue: defenceman Cade Van Brabant of Sturgeon County.

Alberta Grey: netminder Damon Cunningham of Sturgeon County and forward Colton Schmidt of St. Albert.

The Alberta Cup is the last event for scouts to prepare for the Western Hockey League’s bantam draft Thursday.

The Winnipeg ICE have the first overall pick and Savoie is considered the leading candidate to be selected No. 1.

Savoie, 15, compiled 31 goals and 71 points in 31 games with the Northern Alberta Xtreme's midget prep team in the Canadian Sport School Hockey League and is committed to the University of Denver Pioneers in 2021/22.

The Alberta Cup is also an opportunity for administrators, coaches, trainers and referees to be evaluated for future positions with the Team Alberta program.

Among the nine officials working the Alberta Cup are Quinn Dunnigan and Mike Knoblauch of St. Albert and they were selected based on their performances at the three Alberta Cup regional camps held recently in Blackfalds, Calgary and Spruce Grove.

Badminton playoffs

The St. Albert Skyhawks made a racquet in the metro Edmonton badminton league playoffs Wednesday as the division four champions.

The Skyhawks (16-1) defeated the Queen Elizabeth Knights 3-2 in the final at the SkyDome and the match scores were victories of 2-1 in girls’ singles and 2-0 in girls’ doubles and mixed doubles.

The Knights (13-4) won boys’ singles 2-1 and boys’ doubles 2-0.

In the semifinals, the Skyhawks downed the Alexandre-Tache Scorpions 3-2 by sweeping the best-of-three girls’ singles, boys’ doubles and mixed doubles.

For the Scorpions (8-9), Jacob Boucher won boys’ singles 2-0 while Courtney Roy and Janie Lajoie teamed up for the 2-1 decision in girls’ doubles.

Jacalyn Cyr in girls’ singles, Danic Crispin and Rejean Baril in boys’ doubles and Enrick Tremblay and Daphnee Lapointe in mixed doubles also competed.

The Scorpions went on to defeat the Maurice Lavallee Jaguars (10-7) for third place. Cyr in singles, Roy/Lajoie in doubles and Baril/Lapointe in mixed doubles came out on top their respective matches.

The Scorpions were represented by Boucher in singles and Tremblay and Famic Crispin in men’s doubles against the Jaguars.
